Who We Are |
The Alameda Community Band is comprised of people who love music. It was founded 50 years ago by Jim Hewitt, a former band director of Encinal High School. Currently the band is under the direction of Michael L. Wirgler. The Alameda Community Band is a self-supporting 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization and dependent entirely on donations from the public.

A resident of Oakland today, Wirgler is retired from teaching music for the Oakland Unified School District after 33 years. He continues as an active performer, teacher and composer in the Bay Area. He is conductor of the professional Golden Gate Park Band of San Francisco, he performs with the Lamplighter Orchestra of San Francisco and with the Three O’Clock Jump Big Band. He earned both his B.A. and Masters degrees at San Francisco State University, taking his Masters degree in clarinet performance. During his service with the Army, he was stationed at the Presidio in San Francisco, performing as principal clarinet with the 6th Army Band
